Commit to Staying in School |
| Who: |
Brenda Macías is a former Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program tutor from the South San Antonio Independent School District. She currently is a student at Palo Alto College in San Antonio and credits her desire to continue her education, in part, to the program.

|
What: |
The Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program, celebrating its 20th Anniversary this week, is an internationally recognized dropout prevention program benefiting students, families, schools and communities. Since its inception, the program has kept more than 12,000 students in school – equivalent to keeping 98 percent of the students in participating schools in the classroom.
The Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program was created by the Intercultural Development Research Association and began in four school districts in San Antonio, including South San Antonio ISD. In several of the districts since the program was implemented, the dropout rate among participants has fallen from 50 percent to 2 percent. Today, the program spans five states and 14 cities in Brazil.

How ItWorks: |
The program works by identifying secondary school students considered at-risk of dropping out of school and enlisting them as tutors for elementary school students, who are also struggling in school. Given this role of personal and academic responsibility, the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program tutors learn self-discipline and develop self-esteem; schools shift to the philosophy and practices of valuing students considered at-risk of dropping out. The program design is based on IDRA research of dropout data and school holding power. |
IDRA is an independent, private non-profit organization, directed by María Robledo Montecel, Ph.D., dedicated to creating schools that work for all children. As a vanguard leadership development and research team for more than three decades, IDRA has worked with people to create self-renewing schools that value and empower all children, families and communities. IDRA conducts research and development activities, creates, implements and administers innovative education programs and provides teacher, administrator, and parent training and technical assistance. |
