Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program Celebrates 20 Years of Keeping Students in School

What: |
A National Teacher Coordinator Institute is scheduled today to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program for dropout prevention. The Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program works by identifying secondary school students in at-risk situations and enlisting them as tutors for elementary school students who are also struggling in school.
Participating educators and guests from around the country will convene today to celebrate the success of the?program and share ideas for continuing progress.
At Benavidez Elementary School this afternoon, participants will also have the opportunity to observe tutoring in progress and interact with current tutors active in the program. Overall, in several San Antonio school districts, the dropout rate among participants has fallen to less than 2 percent since the program was implemented.

How ItWorks: |
The program works by identifying secondary school students considered at-risk of dropping out of school and enlisting them as tutors for elementary school students, who are also struggling in school. Given this role of personal and academic responsibility, the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program tutors learn self-discipline and develop self-esteem; schools shift to the philosophy and practices of valuing students considered at-risk of dropping out. The program design is based on IDRA research of dropout data and school holding power. |
