The State of Literacy in San Antonio

alt

The illiteracy rate in San Antonio is higher than that of the state and the country as a whole.

alt

San Antonio has the second highest illiteracy rate among major Texas cities. El Paso leads the group, and Austin has the lowest rate.

alt

There are 100,429 illiterate adults in San Antonio, 15.05% of the adult population. Illiteracy is not homogeneously distributed throughout the various districts that make up the city. In some district - such as 1, 4, and particularly 5 - the illiteracy rate exceeds 20%, while in others - such as 8, 9, and 10 - it is below 5%.

Please, direct any question about these figures to Dr. Felix Montes, a Research Associate in IDRA's Division of Research and Evaluation.
