This publication shows educators what is necessary to develop and maintain appropriate programs for secondary level recent immigrant students. A primer on the “basics” of immigrant education (i.e., demographics, legal issues, educational funding), it presents lessons learned through the Texas Immigrant Education Collaborative at school sites, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It describes four successful program initiatives (appropriate curriculum and instruction, a newcomers center, appropriate counseling and building linkages with the community) and future directions of recent-immigrant education.
